Excuse my dust: Catherine Carswell
Carswell later made her living as a journalist in London supporting herself and her daughter after a disastrous marriage, from which she courageously extricated herself through the courts. She made herself a new life down south marrying fellow writer Donald Carswell and socialising with John Middleton Murray and DH Lawrence. Her biographies of Lawrence and of Robert Burns were both controversial, the former costing her her job on the Glasgow Herald and the latter earning her the enmity of the Burns traditionalists.
