Susannah Alice Stephen - You don’t have to be famous to be remembered

A memorial just in James Court just uphill from Lady Stairs Close is the wonderful way Zannah’s friends thought to commemorate her life.

Zannah had gained a degree in modern Languages from St Andrew’s University, worked a while in Glasgow and London, then went on a years solo backpacking tour. On her return she took a postgraduate degree in Landscape Architecture at Edinburgh and set up a business here. She helped to establish and promote the Scottish Society of Garden Designers.

She died in a diving accident off the Galapagos Islands. She loved to travel and this is reflected in the artwork.

The sculpture is the work of Edinburgh born Frances Polly. It is in the form of a seat in the shape of a ziggurat made from Morayshire sandstone. It is embellished with hand letter cutting and has modelled pieces in bronze at each of the levels of the seat.
