Teresa Billington-Grieg 1876 - 1964

Teresa Billinton-Greig had been recruited by the Pankhursts to set up and organise the WSPU in Scotland.

She resigned from the WSPU as she favoured a more democratic organisation and founded the Women’s Freedom League (WFL) with Charlotte Despard.

She campaigned actively throughout Scotland not only for suffrage but also for women’s sexual equality, challenging the double standard of morality and the inequitable situation of women in marriage and employment. Her writings analysed the male oppression of women, and the misogyny and ‘sex prejudice’ they faced.

She left the WFL in 1910 for not being democratic and non-violent enough. She returned to England in 1923. The WFL maintained a strong presence in Scotland.
