Winnie Ewing 1929 -
Dr Winifred Ewing, First female Scottish National Party MP
Nationalist politician. Born in Glasgow and educated at the University of Glasgow, Winnie Ewing practised law before becoming the Member of Parliament for Hamilton (1967-70) and then Moray and Nairn (1974-79).
She was a Member of the European Parliament for the Highlands & Islands (1979-99).
In 1999 became an MSP in the first session of the Scottish Parliament. As the oldest member it was her duty to preside over the opening of the Scottish Parliament, a session she opened with the famous words, 'The Scottish Parliament, adjourned on the 25th day of March in the year 1707, is hereby reconvened'. She remained an MSP until 2003.
She was President of the Scottish National Party (SNP) 1987-2005.
